Introduction to bat surveys

Assisting with bat surveys is an excellent way of getting started in the world of ecological consultancy. In this course, we're giving you the tools you need to get started as smoothly as possible.

What we'll cover:

  • Bat ecology (the what)
  • Legislation (the why) (focus on UK legislation but EU legislation will be covered too)
  • Survey methods (the how)
    • Acoustic surveys
    • IR surveys (with Richard Crompton)
    • Thermal imaging (with Dr. Kayleigh Fawcett-Williams)
  • Short introduction to bat sound analysis
  • Reporting data

No prior knowledge is required to understand the content of this course.

Is this course for you?

This course is primarily aimed at students or recent graduates looking to get started with a career in ecology. However, it is also suitable for anyone with an interest in bats and/or ecology.

The different modules will be given over the course of two sessions of 1h30 each, followed by a Q/A session. Recordings of each session (excl. Q&A) will be posted shortly after the session.
