The Big Bat Course: a comprehensive introduction to bat acoustics

Whether you're a beginner looking to get into bat sound analysis or an experienced bat worker wanting to brush up on your skills, this course has got you covered.

Sessions will be delivered live on Zoom with recordings available in your student library shortly after.

The course includes 4 + 1 modules:

  • Module I (14 Apr, 6PM GMT): The basics of bat sounds
  • Module II (18 Apr, 11AM GMT): Equipment and recordings
  • Module III (21 Apr, 6PM GMT): Classifiers
  • Module IV (25 Apr, 11AM GMT): Interpreting acoustic data
  • Module V (28 Apr, 6PM GMT): European bat call identification

The last module goes into further details of the identification issues of European bat species and is therefore geared towards European bat workers but it might be of interest to bat workers elsewhere as well.

What we will cover:

  • Equipment and good fieldwork practices
  • Classifiers (how to use them, how to build a reference library, etc)
  • Where to find reliable references and how to critically assess them
  • Interpreting bat acoustic data, including charts and basic statistics
  • Much more...

Bonus: Access to a unique training dataset with calls from around the world
